WARD VILLAGE® BEGINS CONSTRUCTION ON KALAE

Neighborhood’s tenth residential tower delivers new homes, retail, and green space expansion

HONOLULU (January 22, 2024) Ward Village®, the award-winning 60-acre master planned community in the heart of Honolulu, broke ground on Kalae – the neighborhood’s tenth residential tower – on Friday, Jan. 19, 2024. The new development will create 330 homes, experiential public art, retail activations, and integrate with Victoria Ward Park. A dynamic mix of street-level commercial spaces and pedestrian-friendly elements, including shade trees, meandering walkways, native landscaping, and public art installations are planned for Kalae. A new plaza at the intersection of Ward Avenue and Auahi Street will also provide a welcoming entry point to Ward Village.

Ward Village commenced construction on Kalae, its tenth residential tower, adding hundreds of new homes, retail, and public spaces to the neighborhood.

“Kalae’s thoughtful integration of streetscapes and new homes frames the makai section of Victoria Ward Park and builds upon our sense of community in Ward Village,” said Doug Johnstone, President, Hawai‘i Region for Howard Hughes. “This new development will further enhance the character of Ward Village, bringing new opportunities for additional housing, retail, and connectivity throughout the neighborhood.”

Located at the corner of Ward Avenue and Ala Moana Boulevard, Kalae offers sweeping views of Oʻahu’s coastline. Residents will enjoy a wide range of amenities including lap and recreation pools, water features, and indoor-outdoor courtyards with adjacent bungalows. Additional amenities include a spa, fitness studio, saunas, BBQ areas with grills, and pizza ovens.

Kalae was 85% pre-sold as of the end of the third quarter in 2023. The development is projected to contribute $606 million in economic impact, $198 million in workers’ earnings, and $37 million in state tax revenue. An average of over 850 jobs will be sustained yearly for three years to construct the tower. Kalae is estimated to generate $127 million in real property tax over 30 years.

Designed by the award-winning architecture firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz, with landscaping by architect Vita Inc., Kalae draws inspiration from local landmarks such as Shangri La and The Honolulu Museum of Art, that represent Honolulu’s international influences while being grounded in its regional aesthetic. Nicole Hollis, the interior designer for the project, was recently honored in the 2024 Architectural Digest Top 100 list for her extensive contributions to the field. Her recent projects in Hawaiʻi include the renowned Kona Village and 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay.

Ward Village marked Kalae’s development milestone with a $37,000 donation to the Honolulu Museum of Art.

About Ward Village®

Ward Village is a Howard Hughes community, set on 60 acres in the heart of Honolulu, between downtown and Waikīkī. Honoring the distinct history of its land, Ward Village is at the forefront of sustainable community development—integrating striking architecture, culture and arts, and public open space. At full buildout, the community will include thousands of homes and approximately one million square feet of unique retail in what Architectural Digest named “Best Planned Community in the United States.”

As a result of strong demand for new housing in urban Honolulu, Ward Village quickly sold out its first seven mixed-use residential towers—Waiea®, Anaha®, Ae‘o®, Ke Kilohana®, ʻAʻaliʻi®, Kō‘ula®, and Victoria Place®—transforming the popular shopping and dining district into a thriving urban neighborhood that offers ocean views and open space, including its newest outdoor gathering place, Victoria Ward Park. New residential buildings in development or under construction include Victoria Place and Kalae®. Since launching public sales in July 2021, The Park Ward Village®has become the fastest-selling market tower in the history of Ward Village. Approved by the Hawaiʻi Community Development Authority (HCDA) in 2021, The Park Ward Village and Ulana Ward Village® will be the newest mixed-use developments to join the neighborhood.
