WARD VILLAGE® AND HAWAIIAN DREDGING COMPANY CREATE SCHOLARSHIP FOR APPRENTICESHIP & JOURNEY WORKER TRAINING

Developer and contractor mark the topping off of Kō‘ula® with a $35,000 gift to Honolulu Community College to support workforce development

HONOLULU - Ward Village®, an award-winning 60-acre master-planned community transforming Honolulu’s urban core, recently celebrated the topping off of Kōʻula®, the neighborhood’s sixth residential building. The final steel beam was lifted into place after being signed by representatives from Ward Village and the project’s construction team, Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company. In recognition of the contributing construction trades and the individuals on the job site who make achieving this development milestone possible, Ward Village donated $25,000 and Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company gifted $10,000 to establish a scholarship for students enrolled in Honolulu Community College’s Apprenticeship and Journey Worker Training program.

“We are grateful to Ward Village and Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company for their generous gift that will support students as they pursue education, training and career opportunities,” said Karen Lee, Interim Chancellor, Honolulu Community College. “Construction has remained one of the economic bright spots during the pandemic, and we appreciate the investment in developing our local workforce and job pipeline.”

The Apprenticeship & Journey Worker Training program at Honolulu Community College provides related instruction to those on Oʻahu who are training in various construction and mechanical trades. In addition, the program offers learning opportunities to journey workers to upgrade their skills and obtain job-related certifications.

“We believe in working together with partners – private and public – to drive positive impact in our community and build a resilient future for our state,” said Doug Johnstone, President, Hawai‘i at The Howard Hughes Corporation. “With the topping off of Kō‘ula, we’re pleased to help further the revitalization of Honolulu’s urban core and continue our company’s tradition of “Topping Off & Giving Back” by strengthening our community in partnership with Hawaiian Dredging Company and Honolulu Community College.”

“The construction industry provides thousands of jobs for Hawai‘i’s economy, and we’re excited to contribute to the development of our workforce,” said Gerry Majkut, President, Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company. “It’s rewarding to reach this project milestone and give back to the programs that help train the professionals who make building a project like Kō‘ula possible.”

The topping off of Kō‘ula follows a strong third quarter earnings report that showed robust sales for residences and healthy momentum occurring in the vibrant neighborhood. 316 Ward Village condominium residences were contracted to sell during the quarter—61 at its three towers recently completed or under construction and 255 at The Park Ward Village which launched pre-sales in July.‘A‘ali‘i®, Kō'ula® and Victoria Place—Ward Village’s three towers recently completed or under construction—are 90.1% sold, with the 61 units sold in the third quarter reflecting a 154.2% increase compared to the same period last year. Since launching sales in July, The Park Ward Village is already 64% sold as of Oct. 29, 2021. In addition, Ward Village recently marked the opening of ‘A‘ali‘i and launch of sales for Ulana Ward Village.

Adjacent to Victoria Ward Park and in the heart of Ward Village, Kōʻula will feature 565 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom homes. Kōʻula’s architecture is designed by award-winning architecture and urban design practice Studio Gang to encourage seamless indoor-outdoor living. Residents will enjoy stunning ocean views, natural light and private lanais in each residence. Targeting LEED Certification, the bold structure improves environmental performance by reducing solar heat gain.

Internationally recognized design firm Yabu Pushelberg is designing the building’s interiors, masterfully integrating natural textures, colors and finishes to reinforce a physical and emotional connection to the islands. Kōʻula’s connection to Hawaiʻi is also evident through its name, bestowed by Sig Zane Designs. Kōʻula’s literal translation to “red sugar cane” references the design of the building’s structural columns and honors the plant’s history in the area, as many varieties were found in Kakaʻako, making it a prosperous and abundant region.

Kōʻula will provide residents with over an acre of elevated amenities, including a swimming pool, children’s play area, poolside cabanas, sunset lounge, a gracious lawn, spacious terraces surrounded by native landscaping and expansive vistas. The amenity level features a spa, deluxe fitness center and multiple event spaces. Positioned on the eighth floor, the amenity deck blends into an open-air great room that overlooks Victoria Ward Park to the west and a 42,000 square foot terrace to the east.

About Ward Village®

Ward Village is a 60-acre master-planned community by The Howard Hughes Corporation® in the heart of Honolulu, located between downtown and Waikīkī. Honoring the distinct history of its land, Ward Village is at the forefront of sustainable community development – integrating striking architecture, culture and arts, and public open space. At full build-out, the community will include approximately one million square feet of unique retail and thousands of homes, in what Architectural Digest named “Best Planned Community in the United States.”

As a result of strong demand for new housing in urban Honolulu, Ward Village is quickly approaching sellout of its first five mixed-use residential towers — Waiea®, Anaha®, Ae‘o®, Ke Kilohana®, and ʻAʻaliʻi® — transforming the popular shopping and dining district into a thriving urban neighborhood that offers ocean views and open space, including its newest outdoor gathering place, Victoria Ward Park. New residential buildings in development or under construction include Kō‘ula and Victoria Place. Since launching public sales in January 2020, Victoria Place has become the fastest-selling market tower in the history of Ward Village. Approved by the Hawaiʻi Community Development Authority (HCDA) in 2021, The Park Ward Village and Ulana Ward Village will be the newest mixed-use developments to join the neighborhood.

As a LEED-ND Platinum-certified master planned community, Ward Village demonstrates its commitment to responsible, mixed use development by investing in public benefits and amenities for Honolulu’s urban community. For more information, visit www.wardvillage.com.
